A California high school football player is in deep trouble after he allegedly smeared Icy-Hot in his opponents face during a football game.

According to CBS Los Angeles, La Canada High School football player Angel Salazar says that he was playing against Salesian High School when a member of the opposing team allegedly reached underneath his face mask in order to smear a substance across his face.

“Our player came to the sidelines, and he was covered in Icy-Hot. Covered in his face,” said La Canada Principal Ian McFeat.

The concern is not just for the attack in the moment, which was a cruel way to get a player off the field, but for the lasting effects it could have had.

“That’s the kind of substance that if it really got in your eyes, it can do some damage,” McFeat said, adding that they were sharing the images of what happened on social media in an attempt to raise awareness and to be sure that it would not happen again to another athlete.

While it’s not clear what motivated the student to attack Salazar, there is concern that a coach put him up to it.

This is the latest in a string of high school football incidents that have made headlines so far this season. Two Texas teen were suspended after they intentionally hit a referee during play.
